AFL 2022: Jack Crisp becomes Collingwood’s latest multiple Copeland Trophy winner after outstanding year

Only 16 Collingwood footballers had won back-to-back Copeland Trophy awards before this year but there is a new member of the club.

Jack Crisp joined elite company at Collingwood on Friday night when he held off ageless captain Scott Pendlebury to win his second-straight Copeland Trophy.

The line-breaking midfielder is just the 17th Magpies player to ever win the club champion award in consecutive years and the first since Brodie Grundy in 2018-19.

Pendlebury (2013-16) and Steele Sidebottom (2017-18) are also among that exclusive group, alongside club legends Nathan Buckley, Len Thompson and Bob Rose.

Crisp, who is out of contract next year but keen to sign a long-term deal, polled in every match to finish on 291 votes, just ahead of Pendlebury (276) and star defender Darcy Moore (269).

Pendlebury has placed in the top three of Collingwood’s best and fairest an extraordinary 14 times in his past 17 seasons, while Moore was recognised as the Pies’ best finals performer.

Jeremy Howe (266) and Sidebottom (265) rounded out the top five in a thrilling count at Crown Melbourne.

Crisp has become a top-liner since being thrown into the blockbuster 2014 trade that saw Dayne Beams join Brisbane, finishing on the Copeland Trophy podium five times.

He has played all 182 games for Collingwood since, including his 200th overall in the heartbreaking preliminary final loss to Sydney, and transitioned from dashing half-back to impactful on-baller.

The 28-year-old’s outstanding finals campaign this year also earned him a runner-up result in the AFL Coaches’ Association’s Gary Ayres Award.

Crisp averaged 24 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six inside 50s and four clearances in another consistently excellent season.

He and Rising Star winner Nick Daicos, who was deservedly named the club’s best first-year player, also polled the equal-most Brownlow Medal votes among Magpies with 11.

Daicos placed seventh in the club champion count, one spot ahead of older brother Josh, who shared eighth with Brayden Maynard.

Other winners included Finlay Macrae (club’s best VFL performer), Maynard (best clubman), Brody Mihocek (leading goalkicker) and Beau McCreery (best pressure player).

Ben Jankovski also accepted the Brendan Stroud Medal as the best player in the club’s Victorian Wheelchair Football League side.
