Adam Treloar’s divorce from Collingwood may take a seriously awkward turn

The hype surrounding Collingwood’s “toxic” break-up with unwanted star Adam Treloar may settle in the most awkward way possible.

Adam Treloar is running out of options.

The Collingwood star, unwanted by the club despite being contracted until the end of 2025, is yet to make any firm moves when it comes to finding a new home next season and it could see him remain in the black and white after all.

Treloar is on a lucrative back-ended deal and the Magpies want to push him out to ease salary cap pressure. The midfielder never wanted to leave, but reportedly found himself with little choice as his relationship with the club reached breaking point.

Initially there were reports Collingwood didn’t think he could perform at his peak in Melbourne when his partner Kim Ravaillion and young daughter moved to Queensland to continue her professional netball career.

Treloar angrily hit back when asked if he’d considered the toll of being separated from his family, saying of course he and Ravaillion had discussed what living in different states would be like.

Then there was the claim coach Nathan Buckley told Treloar in a phone call senior players wanted him gone.

One thing everybody can agree on is the situation is one giant mess. Herald Sun AFL reporter Jon Ralph called it “toxic” a few days ago on Fox Footy.

But a lack of salary cap wiggle room at other clubs — preventing them from recruiting Treloar — may mean he lines up for Collingwood again in 2021.

Treloar never wanted to leave Collingwood, but he may be forced out.

Treloar was determined to play for the Pies even when his family moved to Queensland.

Speaking on Trade Radio today, journalist Mitch Cleary said it was highly unlikely any of Hawthorn, St Kilda or Carlton were in a position to make a play for Treloar. He added Essendon was more focused on poaching Josh Dunkley from the Western Bulldogs, while the Dogs were yet to meet with Treloar even though they are “pretty keen”.

“The Bulldogs are pretty keen, they’re keen to meet with him at least. But Adam Treloar hasn’t come to the party on it,” Cleary said.

SEN’s Sam Edmund reported on Tuesday morning while Treloar’s management is working behind the scenes to explore his options, the footy player hasn’t met with another club yet, just a little over two days out from the Trade Period deadline (7.30pm AEDT on Thursday).

Edmund said the financial complexities of working out a deal Treloar would find acceptable have proved difficult for the likes of St Kilda, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs, while Hawthorn has “shown no meaningful interest”.

“It’s highly unlikely another club will suddenly come out of the woodwork,” Edmund wrote.

“Instead, it’s more likely Treloar stays at the Pies for one more year, giving his camp and rival clubs time to plan for a move this time next year.”

“It’s not ideal, but it’s the best card in the bad hand that he has been dealt by his own club.”
