Darwin’s newest centenarian Ron Charles has looked back on his time in the Territory. But he does have one concern about reaching the milestone.

A move to the Top End, doing everything in moderation and a healthy love of Shenannigans pub has helped long-time Darwin resident Ron Charles make it to a milestone birthday.

Reflecting on his 100th birthday, the former England native said he made the move to Darwin about 25 years ago, and hadn’t looked back since.

“I wanted three things. I wanted it reasonably safe. I wanted to speak English. And I wanted a good climate. I got all three here,” he said.

It didn’t take long for the retired navy navigator to adapt to the Territory lifestyle.

“I loved it straight away,” he said.

“I like the Shenannigans (pub). It’s always a lively old place

“Darwin’s always had a good sense of humour, which I’ve enjoyed — I wouldn’t leave Darwin now for quids.”

He said he noticed a lot had changed since he first landed in the NT all those years ago.

“I‘m surprised at how Darwin’s gone quiet,” he said.

“It used to be bustling when I first came here.

“It’s sad to see the businesses closed and many shops are shut up. And I’m so sorry to see people leaving Darwin.”

His advice for other people hoping to make it to 100 is to look after your health.

“I do everything in moderation, don’t over drink I don’t smoke at all,” he said.

Despite saying he has lived a full and happy life living between the UK and Australia, he does have one gripe about turning 100.

“It’s too old — you can’t get the girls anymore,” he said.
