A young police officer has died after a freak fall during his own engagement celebrations.

Senior Constable Liam Trimmer, 29, who had migrated from the UK to join the Western Australia Police Force, died on Sunday.

Constable Trimmer and his fiancee had gathered with friends and family to celebrate the big news at his home in WA.

But a freak fall during the festivities saw the 29-year-old cut the carotid artery in his neck, causing heavy bleeding.

Desperate friends and family rushed to try and save him, but he was declared dead before emergency services could arrive.

The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the coroner.

Described by Police Commissioner Col Blanch as “extremely well-liked” and with his “whole life ahead of him,” Senior Constable Trimmer’s death has rocked colleagues and loved ones.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are extended to his family and colleagues,” police spokeswoman expressed on Monday.

The WA Police’s health, welfare, and safety division was mobilised to provide support to those affected by the tragedy.

Commissioner Blanch spoke of the impact of Senior Constable Trimmer’s passing.

“I know when my phone rings early in the morning from a senior officer, generally it’s not good news, and tragically it wasn’t,” he told morning radio.

“I know everyone that was involved is really, really hurting at the moment, and I think they wish they could just wake up from this nightmare,” he said.

“It’s more important now for us to wrap around each other, to lean on each other. Can I thank the community and those involved — first responders and the broader parts of the community — for really offering their support to the family and fellow officers?

“I think when police officers in Western Australia, regardless of the circumstances, pass away, I know that everyone feels it across the community.”

Senior Constable Trimmer’s fiancee, a nurse, is reportedly processing the loss alongside their families and friends.

Reflecting on Senior Constable Trimmer’s service, Commissioner Blanch noted his postings in regional WA, including stints in Kalgoorlie, as well as his roles in the gang crime squad and tactical response group.

“He was a very, very competent, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him — that’s how sad this is,” Mr Blanch said.

“This officer is an extraordinary officer who loved helping the community. He was a fine example of WA policing, and it’s just such a tragedy.”

Police Minister Paul Papalia expressed his devastation at the loss

Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti described the tragedy as “awful” and extended her condolences to Senior Constable Trimmer’s loved ones.

Senior Constable Trimmer’s journey from the UK to Western Australia was featured in the UK TV series Wanted Down Under, inspiring migrants seeking new beginnings in Australia.
