White shark warning for several popular Perth beaches

A white shark has been detected on multiple occasions, prompting authorities to issue a warning across metropolitan beaches in one city.

Great White shark deemed responsible for fatal attack on surfer

A shark warning has been issued for several popular beaches in Perth.

It comes after an increased number of reported white shark detections from Mullaloo to Leighton beaches.

“It is possible that the frequency or duration of the recent reported detections may increase the likelihood of encountering a shark in this area,” SharkSmart said on Friday.

Fisheries officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as well as local government rangers and Surf Life Saving WA, will continue to monitor the situation.

Beach visitors are urged to take additional caution in the metropolitan area and adhere to any closures.

“During winter, many beaches are not patrolled full-time, so water users need to take responsibility for their actions by staying up to date,” SharkSmart warned.

People are urged to check the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on (08) 9442 8600.

The most recent shark attack in Western Australia happened near Broome, in the state’s north, last month.

Brett Highlands, 48, was attacked off Quandong Beach by a suspected three-metre tiger shark.

He suffered bites to his forearm and hand.

“It was the chomping effect that I really felt,” he told 7 News.

“Like a dog trying to get a grip of a bone. Just a wild animal attached to my arm.”

Mark Sanguinetti, 59, was surfing when he was killed by a 4.5m white shark at Tuncurry Beach, near Forster on the NSW mid-north coast, last month.

He saw the shark and tried to warn others before the animal turned on him, biting him on the upper right thigh.
