PREMIER Colin Barnett says he can’t see a future for sport at Patersons Stadium after the new Perth stadium opens at Burswood in 2018.

Patersons Stadium is unlikely to see any sports action when the new Burswood Stadium is complete.

PREMIER Colin Barnett says he can’t see a future for sport at Patersons Stadium after the new Perth stadium opens at Burswood in 2018.

Mr Barnett said the stadium, leased by the WA Football Commission from the State Government, could be turned into a housing development, but no decision had been made.

“I’ve got to say I can’t see a future for Patersons Stadium as it is,” he told ABC radio.

“I think when the new stadium is completed by 2018 it will be so good and so attractive for major sporting and entertainment events, and the fans’ experience will be so good, that I don’t think anyone will want to come to Subiaco.”

It comes after West Coast Eagles earlier this month signed a 99-year lease with the Town of Victoria Park to base its new HQ at Lathlain Park.

Earlier this year, WAFC chairman Frank Cooper confirmed the commission could give-up the lease.

The WAFC and City of Subiaco are working together on a project to ensure the history of Subiaco Oval is not lost when the ground is vacated.

Exhibitions, events, signage, public art and heritage trails are planned for the potential future redevelopment of the stadium site.

The $1 billion new Perth Stadium is planned to be ready ahead of the start of the 2018 AFL season.
