Two young men have been charged after allegedly threatening to behead West Australian Premier Mark McGowan and his children.

WA Police allege that about 8.50pm on November 20 the pair phoned the Premier and “left a number of threatening messages”.

Police did not reveal the details of the alleged phone messages, but Mr McGowan confirmed the alleged threats when he spoke to reporters later in the day.

“It’s the sort of stuff that Islamic fundamentalists do in Syria. It’s not the Australian way,” he said.

Asked what it was like to listen to the messages, the Premier described it as “unpleasant”.

Detectives have charged a 20-year-old and an 18-year-old man with one count each of acts creating false apprehension as to the existence of threats or danger.

They are now subject to strict protective bail conditions until their scheduled appearance in Armadale Magistrates Court on December 17.

Mr McGowan said it was the worst threat he had experienced since his government mandated the Covid-19 vaccine for most workforces.

“I just urge people to stop this,” he said.

“This is disturbing conduct, it’s extremist conduct, it’s unAustralian conduct.

“It’s not going to change our approach — we’re going to continue to work to get West Australians vaccinated ... that’s what is needed.

“These sorts of threats, intimidation, violence (and) extremism is dangerous, it’s unhelpful and it’s not going to change anything the government does.”

Mr McGowan also urged people attending anti-vax rallies to “think about who you are associating with”.

“These people are not good people,” he warned.

Mr McGowan last week revealed his electorate office had to be shut down after a series of incidents, including threats to kill, rape and bomb.
