A PERTH man has avoided jail and was instead handed a suspended sentence for installing a hidden camera in a public toilet at a suburban shopping centre.

David Rhoden, 52, was sentenced in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday on three counts of unlawfully installing an optical surveillance device.

A worker found a camera hidden inside a smoke detector on the ceiling of a male public toilet at the Belmont Forum shopping centre on July 31.

The camera was found hidden inside a smoke detector.
The camera was found hidden inside a smoke detector.

Just days later, police searched Rhoden’s Queens Park home and found a number of devices with recordings of males using a public bathroom.

The court was previously told Rhoden was convicted earlier this year of a similar offence at the Westfield Carousel in November last year.

He had been placed on an 18-month intensive supervision order.

In court on Thursday, Rhoden received a seven-month prison sentence suspended for 10 months.
