Armed man shot dead by police in Kalgoorlie identified by family

Police have provided an update after an armed man was shot dead by officers during an incident in the WA Goldfields.

A man, who “advanced on” police officers before he was fatally shot in an incident in the Western Australian city of Kalgoorlie, has been identified.

The family of Dave, who have chosen to withhold his surname, released a photo of the 58-year-old on Saturday afternoon, and continue to assist police with their inquiries.

WA Police earlier on Saturday provided an update as their investigation into Friday afternoon’s shooting continues.

It happened after officers were called to an alley off Whitlock St after reports of a man armed with a gun about 12.15pm.

“The police officers discharged their firearms after giving the man several warnings, and after the man advanced on them,” a WA Police spokesperson said.

Dave was armed with a handgun, which has since been taken for testing to determine if it was a working gun.

Three rounds between two police guns were fired in the standoff, with the man hit once in the chest.

Police provided first aid until paramedics arrived, but the man died around an hour later in Kalgoorlie Hospital.

“Body Worn Camera vision of the incident has been reviewed, and based on that preliminary assessment it appears the officers involved acted in accordance with policy and their training,” the police spokesperson said.

“The health and welfare of the officers involved remains a priority, and they have been provided mandatory critical incident leave.

“Health and welfare personnel have travelled to Kalgoorlie to provide support to the officers.”

The Major Crime Division continues their investigation, overseen by police Internal Affairs.

Meanwhile, Premier Roger Cook said his thoughts are with the officers involved.

“There cannot be anything more confronting for a police officer than to go into the situation that those brave officers did,” Mr Cook said.

“They made the difficult decision to discharge their weapons to keep Western Australians safe.

“We thank them for their bravery, and I hope now the Blue Family can gather around them to help them through that difficult experience.”
