Route 57 trams were diverted in both directions via Moonee Ponds between Union Road and Melrose Street.

VicTraffic requested motorists travel down Epsom Road onto Macauley Road to avoid the closure.

A VicRoads spokesman said the incident, which happened at about 6:30am this morning, had caused “massive delays in the area”.

Police were also called to the site to divert traffic.

Racecourse Rd has become Melbourne’s worst blackspot for trucks hitting rail bridges and bringing down overhead trams lines.

Once a fortnight this year, truck crashes have caused lengthy delays for motorists and tram passengers on the busy arterial road.

On the Princes Freeway a collision involving up to ten vehicles closed two left hand lanes between Kororoit Creek Road and the M80 Ring Road in Altona.

All lanes are now open after the incident, which saw one patient taken to Frankston Hospital with non-life threatening injuries

In Dandenong, traffic heading south on Stud Road has come to a halt, following a collision between a car and a motorbike.

A man in his 20s was assessed at the scene and taken to the Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Southbound lanes have been closed between Monash Freeway and Heatherton Road.

VicTraffic has urged motorists to use Power Road or Heatherton Road to avoid the road closure, as delays build.
