The Armadale home of collapsed building firm Porter Davis co-founder David Shergold has hit the market with a $20m-$22m asking price.

And in an unusual move it was offered for sale abroad before being listed in Australia.

Mr Shergold helped create the home building business in 1999, but sold his stake in 2007 — well before Porter Davis went into liquidation with about 1700 people awaiting homes to be built last year.

Abercromby’s director Jock Langley said the five-bedroom property was regarded as one of the suburb’s best.

Records show the property is in the name of Mr Shergold’s wife, Nathalie.

While Mr Langley declined to discuss the ownership of the home, he did reveal it was built on the tennis court and former gardens of the neighbouring landmark Flete House.

“It is a true one off,” he said.

“It has a magnificent pool, a large screening of evergreen trees behind it that give it good privacy.”

The agent also noted efforts to sell the property had started overseas, with interest already coming in from expats in Italy, London and Switzerland. Interstate buyers are also eyeing the home from Sydney and Queensland, while local parties have included recent migrants from across Asia.

The Shergolds bought the home about 10 years ago and gave the residence that was only a few years old at the time a “total refit”.

“It has a cinema and a life between all three floors, and there’s a wine cellar and it’s got extensive formal and informal areas,” Mr Langley said.

“It’s an excellent home for entertaining.

Its location near the amenities of High St, Armadale, have also attracted buyers, he added.

The neighbouring property once held Armadale’s home price record with a $13.75m sale in 2006. He was a business luminary who sold National Waste to Kerry Packer in the 1980s.

The suburb’s current house price record is held by a Hampden Rd residence, which sold for $26.51m in June, 2022.
