A man and a woman have died after what is being reported as a murder-suicide that unfolded in front of their young child.

Emergency services were called to Mount Pleasant Road in Nunawading, 18km east of the Melbourne CBD, about 6pm on Saturday.

When they arrived, they found the body of a woman inside a white Audi and a man suffering serious injuries outside the vehicle.

Paramedics worked to save him but he died at the scene.

Nine News reports the woman was stabbed to death by her ex-partner as the couple’s child, believed to be eight-years-old, watched on.

Police yesterday said they believed the man and the woman were known to each other.

“The exact cause of death is yet to be determined at this stage and police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident,” a spokeswoman said in a statement.

Police said a child that was “believed to have been in the vehicle was not physically injured”.

Neighbours have revealed their shock at what unfoldedon a normally quiet street.

“It’s terrible. I’ve lived here for 25 years. We are very much a quiet little community particularly at our end of the street,” one neighbour told The Age.

Neighbour Daniel Bourke told the Herald Sun he returned home to find the area swarming with police and paramedics.

“I was out walking my dog last night and came home to see police and ambulances and the driveway completely sealed off,” he said.

“I feel shocked. I’m in total shock.”

Police say they are not searching for anyone else in relation to the two deaths. The young boy is believed to be in the care of detectives.
