Melbourne auctions: Daniel Rioli, Ryan Schoenmakers and Peter O’Farrell score wins under the hammer
Footy identities past and present sold big at the weekend as Richmond star Daniel Rioli sold his property, and leading Carlton lawyer Peter O’Farrell’s home scored top gong.
AFL heavy hitters including three-time Richmond premiership player Daniel Rioli, ex-Hawthorn star Ryan Schoenmakers and top Carlton lawyer Peter O’Farrell sold their homes under the hammer across Melbourne.
Fresh off a win Friday night against Geelong, Rioli’s three-bedroom investment pad at 1/11 Matthieson St, Highett opened with a $1m bid at auction on Saturday, before it was called on the market at $1.1m.
It was eventually secured by a young couple for $1.12m.

Marshall White Bayside auctioneer Matthew Pillios said it was a “great auction” which gathered a massive crowd.
“I was delighted to get Daniel a good result, he was very happy,” Mr Pillios said.
Rioli purchased the Highett home in 2018 for $929,000, according to PropTrack data, and he had since rented it out for $600 a week.
Hawthorn premiership player Ryan Schoenmakers and his wife Alisha also sold their Ashburton abode for well over their asking price.
The three-bedroom home at 7a Gloucester Rd sold for $1.84m under the hammer — $75,000 above its reserve price of $1.765m.
A crowd of 100 people gathered at the Ashburton property, with four buyers actively bidding.
Purchasing the site in 2014, the couple developed two townhouses about a year ago and put one up for sale.
Jellis Craig Boroondara agent Michael Wood said the high quality build attracted bidders who were all looking to live in the home.
“The owners were rewarded due to not compromising on the quality of construction,” Mr Wood said.
Meanwhile, one of the top selling homes on the auction block was the property of leading Melbourne barrister and Carlton Football Club lawyer Peter O’Farrell, who represented Patrick Cripps during his controversial tribunal appearance last year.
The five-bedroom home at 12 Grandview St, Moonee Ponds, sold for a whopping $4.64m, scoring Mr O’Farrell a $640,000 premium after it was called on the market at $4m. It was initially listed for $3.75m-$3.95m.
As champagne was passed around to more than 100 spectators, the auction opened with a $3.75m vendor bid, before two bidders jumped in to compete.
Mr O’Farrell spent the last 15 years at the Moonee Ponds home, where he raised his three sons, but said he is ready to downsize.
The property sold to another family with three boys, which Jellis Craig Kensington director and auctioneer John Morello described as a “beautiful” outcome.
“It was an amazing auction … it’s gone from one family to another,” Mr Morello said.
PropTrack recorded a clearance rate of 66 per cent from 739 results across Melbourne.
