Drummond North: Zig Zag winery looking for new vino lovers to take over estate with its own bed and breakfast
A striking architecturally designed mud brick house and its sprawling 8.9ha property is giving vino lovers a chance to secure a dream home and business just an hour out of Melbourne.
A striking double business up for sale is giving wine lovers a chance to secure a dream home opportunity just an hour out of Melbourne.
Nestled in the hills and vineyards of central Victoria, this 8.9ha estate has just hit the market with a $1.8m-$1.9m price guide.
As soon as current vendors Henry and Harriet Churchill set eyes on the architecturally designed mud brick house, they knew Zig Zag Road was special.

“We fell in love with our home the moment we saw it, the moment we stepped on to the farm,” Harriet says.
Located in the wine country between Castlemaine, Kyneton, Malmsbury and Daylesford, the property — and its accompanying businesses – the well-established Zig Zag Road Winery and a bed and breakfast – offers a rare lifestyle opportunity.
This tree change was something that the vendors relished, but initially, for a couple about to welcome their first child, with no winemaking or farming experience, seemed a bit “wild”.
“We were looking for a tree change, an hour out from Melbourne, something that would offer us a lifestyle business that could support our growing family, and this is what we got,” Harriet says. “We refer to that moment as a “Zig Zag Moment” now, meaning that your heart just knows something is right even if it seems a bit wild!”
The mud brick home itself offers sustainable living, with its design and thermal mass keeping the temperature cool in summer and with the wood burner and split-system airconditioner, warm in winter. Its design is also perfect for hosting guests, Harriet says.
“The house itself, given its open-plan design and generous bedrooms, is a brilliant house to host guests in, and I love what we did with the caboose, what we call the “little vine house”.
“This truly charming, light-filled space near the main house gives us so many options.
“It’s a brilliant little B&B business and a perfect place to put my father-in-law when he visits for six weeks,” she says.
The home, caboose and cellar door at Zig Zag Road all offer sweeping views of the vineyards and the forest beyond, and the home’s windows capitalise on natural light.
Outside there are different pockets of the farm which offer a sense of tranquillity, connection to nature and opportunity for kids to explore.
“I can’t tell you how many cups of tea I’ve had stealing a long moment gazing out at the way the seasons change the vines or the eucalyptus bark, feet curled beneath me on a sofa.,” Harriet says.
“But when you do want to get out and into it, there is much to explore alone or with kids.”
