A truck driver has been charged after a horror smash killed two women in western Victoria.

Police allege the 48-year-old truck driver hit a Holden sedan from behind while it was turning into a rest stop on the Western Highway in Laharum, about 300km northwest of Melbourne.

Police said the Holden was pushed into oncoming traffic where it collided with a Toyota sedan travelling in the opposite direction.

The passenger of the Holden, a 42-year-old Ararat woman, and the driver of the Toyota, a 71-year-old Horsham woman, were killed instantly.

The driver of the Holden, a 36-year-old Black Range man, was flown to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police arrested the uninjured truck driver at the scene and he has since been charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He has been bailed to face Horsham Magistrates Court in January next year.

Police said the white Kenworth semi-trailer was travelling northwest when it allegedly crashed into the rear of a Holden about 12.20pm on Tuesday.

The Toyota travelling in the opposite direction then collided with the passenger side of the Holden.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who was travelling southeast on the Western Highway shortly before 12.20pm and has dashcam footage or any information that could assist investigators, has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
