Prisoner stabbed in upper body at Barwon
UP to four attackers were involved in a prison stabbing, with an inmate flown to hospital after being knifed repeatedly at one of Victoria’s maximum security prisons this afternoon.
A PRISONER has been stabbed repeatedly at one of Victoria’s maximum security prisons this afternoon and has been flown to hospital.
Paramedics were called to Barwon Prison around 12.30pm today to attend to a male patient.
The man has injuries to his upper body and is in a serious but stable condition.
The Department of Justice confirmed there had been a stabbing.
“A 41-year-old man has been flown to Melbourne,” a Department of Justice spokeswoman said.
“The police have been notified and are investigating.”
A prison source told the Herald Sun that the incident occurred in the Cassia Unit, a mainstream unit that holds up to 80 inmates.
It’s understood prison authorities believe three or four attackers were involved, and tensions between rival bikie gangs may have sparked the violence.
It was yet to be determined whether the inmate would be moved to a more secure unit once he had recovered.
Shadow Minister for Corrections Edward O’Donohue said it was time for authority to be restored in Victoria’s prisons.
“The violence and chaos continues in the prison system under Daniel Andrews,” he said.
“It’s time for the Corrections Minister to ensure that authority is restored.”
