A 29-year-old man has been identified as one of two found dead alongside his dog following an early morning shooting in Melbourne’s west.

Police say the two young men were shot at the home on Carmichael Drive, Wyndham Vale in the early hours of Saturday morning following a confrontation at the property.

Atem Atem is believed to have been with friends when he was shot and killed as he was arriving home about 2.30am.

Another man was killed and one is fighting for his life in hospital – both were friends with Mr Atem.

The 29-year-old’s father, Deng Atem, stood outside the property just hours after his son was killed, looking visibly shaken.

Family and friends of Mr Atem also gathered at the scene on Friday to mourn the loss.

Detective Inspector Chris Murray said a large group of people arrived at the house in three cars at around 2:30am.

“There was a confrontation and two males have been shot dead,” he said.

“They were two young men … at home, minding their own business when this tragic event occurred.”

Both men are believed to have died inside the house.

A third man, who police believe to be in his 20s, was also shot. He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The relationship between the victims and the shooters had not yet been confirmed by police, but Mr Murray said he did not believe it was a random attack.

“We don’t think this was an incident which is going to affect the broader community in terms of innocent people,” he said.

Police were unable to say how many firearms were involved in the attack.

“It’s very early stages,” Mr Murray said.

Authorities had earlier said they were called to the scene after reports of a stabbing.

“Someone will know something,” he said.

“People involved here would have gone back and spoken to individuals. So whatever information people have, no matter how small, we’d like to hear from them.”
