A MELBOURNE primary school was placed under lockdown after a man armed with a machete entered school grounds.

Police say the man ran through Park Orchards Primary School about 2.30pm after he allegedly robbed a nearby bottle shop.

The school was temporarily placed in lockdown by police before the area was given the all-clear by authorities.

Office manager Elissa Stewart told Fairfax students were in class when the incident took place.

“The students didn’t know [what it was about], they just thought it was a drill,” she said.

It is believed the man robbed the Park Orchards Cellars and Kevin Wang said he was out the back when he heard his father and a store owner screaming.

“I heard my dad screaming so I’ve come out and the criminal just ran,” he said.

“If I wasn’t in the store, I don’t know what would have happened.”

Mr Wang said the robber was looking for Johnny Walker.

“Then he just grabbed my dad’s left arm with one hand and with the other hand began to draw a knife from his bag,” he said.

The man was described as being of caucasian appearance, aged in his late 20s or early 30s and wearing a grey hoodie. He fled on foot.
