Man in custody following deadly Fitzroy Gardens incident
Police are investigating the death and have taken one man into custody, following what is believed to have been a violent physical altercation.
A man has died in a popular Melbourne garden, following an alleged physical assault.
Emergency services were called to Fitzroy Gardens in the city’s inner east at around 6.50am on Monday following what is believed to have been a physical altercation between two men.
A 52-year-old Ringwood man was treated at the scene but died shortly after.
A 36-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested at the gardens.
He is now in hospital under police guard.
“At this time police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident and both men are yet to be identified,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
“The exact circumstances are yet to be determined and police would like to speak to anyone in the area who may have witnessed the incident.”
Examinations of the scene were underway throughout the morning, with police forensics seen entering the pond at the gardens as part of their investigation.

An area of the gardens close to the pond and fountain had seemingly been cordoned off while police remained at the scene late into the morning.
Homicide Squad detectives are continuing their investigations.
