Arson probe launched after woman dies in house fire in Geelong

An arson probe has been launched after a woman was found dead in a horrific house fire early in the morning.

A “suspicious” house fire that claimed the life of a woman in Geelong is now under investigation, police have announced.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Upper Skene St in Newtown after a home was reported to have been engulfed in flames at around 2am on Monday.

Upon investigating the home’s interior, a woman was found dead at the scene.

A crime scene has since been established at the property and detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad, as well as an arson chemist, are expected to attend the scene this morning.

Victoria Police said they were treating the blaze as “suspicious”.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or who has further information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
