POLICE have called for public help as they try to determine what caused a serious single-vehicle accident on Tasmania’s East Coast.

Emergency crews called to the crash on Mayfield Jetty Rd — 1.7km south of the Mayfield Beach camping and conservation area — about 4.10pm yesterday.

It appears the silver Mercedes hatch was travelling north but crossed onto the southbound lane on a bend.

Police say the car then left the road and hit a tree.

Extensive damage was caused to the driver’s side guard and pillar area of the car.

The 69-year-old female driver — the sole occupant of the vehicle — was trapped and sustained serious leg injuries.

She was cut free by local SES and Tasmania Fire Service volunteers before being treated at the scene by Ambulance Tasmania volunteers.

The woman was flown by the Westpac Rescue helicopter to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Police say the cause of the accident is still not known.

Anyone who witnessed the car travelling on the Tasman Highway before the crash is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
