A SUNNY 23C day meant no dashing through the snow for Christmas elves, but it did attract thousands to the 36th Hobart Christmas Pageant.

An estimated 35,000 people lined the streets of Hobart’s central business district for the annual tradition.

Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey said the turnout had matched last year’s, which was believed to be a record.

“We had excellent weather both days and some fantastic performers this year and last,” she said.

With more than 60 parade entries and 1700 participants, there was something for everyone to get excited about, including circus performers, stilt walkers, dragons, schnauzers and crowd favourite Santa.

Among the festive crowd was the Thomas family from Cygnet, who arrived bright and early to nab one of the best viewing spots.

They come to the parade every year and play Christmas music in the car.

Mum Rachel said the family’s favourites in the parade were the animals.

“They loved the dogs and the dragon from Dragons Abreast,” she said.

“Of course, they were very excited for Santa too.”
