TWO years after her husband died from pancreatic cancer, Hobart businesswoman Sommai Kelly is taking to the stage to help save others from the same fate.
Ms Kelly is staging Siam Daughter as a fundraiser for Cancer Council Tasmania on December 2 at the Theatre Royal, Hobart, before taking the show around the state.
Ms Kelly will donate $10 from every ticket to the Cancer Council, with a goal of raising $100,000.
“When Philip passed away, I was feeling such loss and depression and everyone at the Cancer Council was so supportive and reached out their hands and helped me back onto my feet,” she said.
“Now I want to be able to do something to give back to them and other Tasmanians affected by cancer.”
Siam Daughter is the autobiographical story of Ms Kelly’s escape from political unrest in Thailand — formerly Siam — 25 years ago.
Collaborating with the Tasmanian music, film, culture and dance communities, the show will also feature stories of the way of life for Siam women across two centuries.
Cancer Council Tasmania chief executive officer Penny Egan said the support of Ms Kelly and others like her was vital to the charity, which needed to raise more than $4 million a year to continue providing its current services and programs.
