A FLOTILLA of Tasmania’s finest vessels has escorted the tall ship Tenacious up the River Derwent on her maiden visit to Hobart.

The three-masted vessel docked at Princes Wharf about lunchtime after being greeted by the Windeward Bound, SV Rhona H and the Lady Nelson.

Television crews and crowds with cameras lined the docks and a small group of kayakers kept a respectful distance from the imposing vessel — the largest timber ship to be built in the UK in the past century.

Captain Simon Catterson and his crew were welcomed to the city by Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey.

The Tenacious is 65m long, including bowsprit, with the three masts rising up to 47m above deck. When fully rigged, she carries 1200 square metres of canvas across 18 sails.

At 586 tonnes and built from 200-year-old Siberian larch trees, she is the largest working wooden boat in the world.

The magnificent barque was built in the UK in 2000 by 1500 volunteers, about half of whom were living with a disability.

She is on a short visit to Hobart before returning for the Wooden Boat Festival in February.

The vessel was designed to make it possible for sailors with a disability to “work the ship” on her ocean-going, bluewater passages.

Physical disabilities, sensory disabilities or intellectual disabilities present no barriers to sailors taking part in long-distance sailing journeys.

Able-bodied sailors are equally welcome aboard, with the ratio of able-bodied to those with a disability usually about half and half among the 40-member crew.

The Wooden Boat Festival will be held at Sullivans Cove from February 10 to 13.
