WARRANE Primary School parents have voted against a proposal to change the school’s name.

The school association was considering a name change to build a more positive profile, with families asked to vote on names from a list of 20, including Swift Parrot, Sunnyside, Rosny, Waverly, Kangaroo Bay and Meehan Ranges primary school or the Eastern Shore Community School.

Of parents who voted, 64 per cent chose to keep the name Warrane Primary School.

In the lead up to the vote, more than 300 people had signed a petition opposing the name change.

Franklin MP Julie Collins and Senator Carol Brown, a former student of the school, congratulated the school community on voting for the retention of the name.

“Warrane Primary has a proud record going back more than 60 years,” Senator Brown said.

Parent Kim Doran, who was involved in starting the petition against the name change, said it was a great win for people power.

“Fingers crossed this is the end of the issue,” she said.
