Latest: The Department of Health has issued advice for Optus customers who may need to contact emergency services, amid the telco’s ongoing outage.
The department issued a statement on Facebook on Wednesday saying that while their phone lines – including triple-0 – were not affected by the outage, the Poisons Information Centre hotline was currently being impacted as a result of the outage.
The information centre is unable to receive calls as a result, the department said.
“During this time, Tasmanian residents needing poisons advice should call the temporary hotline number on 1300 392 539,” their update read.
“In the event of an emergency, call triple-0.”
In an earlier online statement, Optus said customers should use a mobile line to call triple-0 if needed.
“Optus can confirm that triple-0 (000) calls will not work from an Optus landline (fixed line telephone),” they wrote.
“Mobile calls to triple-0 will work if another carrier is available.”
Minister for Science and Technology, Madeleine Ogilvie said the government was monitoring the situation.
She confirmed that no Tasmanian Government services had been impacted as a result of the outage.
“The Tasmanian Government is seeking regular updates from Optus and the Australian Government,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“Businesses impacted who require further information can contact the Business Tasmania hotline on 1800 440 026.”
Ms Ogilvie repeated advice that affected Optus customers who needed emergency services should use a mobile line to call triple-0.
Update, 12.23pm: For Optus users who need to come into the city, parking meters are still operational, despite customers being unable to access the EasyPark app.
City of Hobart acting Connected City director, Felicity Edwards said Optus customers could use other methods of payment to validate their parking.
“Meters are fully operational and available for credit card, debit card contactless tap and pay, or coins,” Ms Edwards said.
