MOFO will turn a building in the Hobart CBD into an interactive late-night museum/club in January, as the festival’s popular Faux Mo afterparty dishes up three nights of “interconnected visual and musical exploration” for thousands of revellers.

The disused office building at 12 Murray St – which has been earmarked for demolition since before last summer’s festival – will again host Faux Mo from January 20-22, with patrons promised “a wildly creative assortment of music, art and sensory experience” each night.

Faux Mo’s visual curator, local artist Jamin, said a series of newly commissioned installations would transform 12 Murray into “a network of visual and audible tricks, alien currencies and otherworldly dilemmas”, with partygoers invited to get involved and become “part of that ecosystem”.

Lead artist Aedan Howlett will collaborate on the project with 30 visual artists from across the country, including 2004 Archibald Prize winner Craig Ruddy, while visiting street artists HA-HA, Makatron, Order 55, Christopher Jarratt and Jo Peel and Hobart’s Tom O’Hern will work alongside local installation artists, “combining a multitude of fascinating processes and surprising materials” to create an immersive environment.

Bridging the art and music programs, Australia’s “undisputed king of audiovisual trippiness”, Ego, and hip-hop and jungle producer Ribongia will perform each night, joined by audiovisual artists Sean Healy, Bon Mott, Roberto Meza Mont, Selena de Carvalho, Keith Deverell and Triggernometry across the weekend. Curated by champion turntablist Dameza, the musical line-up will be headlined by US mash-up pioneer DJ Z-Trip, who has worked with the likes of Public Enemy, DJ Shadow and Nas and rocked the stages of big-time festivals Coachella, Lollapalooza, SXSW and the Big Day Out.

Berlin-based rapper, producer and slam poet Black Cracker is also headed to Hobart for the event, which will also feature several Sydney-based acts including “industrial-strength violinist” Veronique Serret, powerful rapper L-Fresh the Lion, funk and soul DJ Raine Supreme and the city’s new queen of bass music, Sippy.

Summer of festive fun

MOFO is just one many musical marvels Mona has in store for this summer.

Australian guitar gurus The Grigoryan Brothers will mark the start of the season with a free outdoor show on December 3.

That will be followed by the fourth annual Standing in the Shadows of Mona concert on the afternoon of December 4, featuring performances by the Southern Gospel Choir and William Crighton, Andrew Legg, Maria Lurighi, Brian Ritchie and more.

The free event always attracts thousands of people to the Mona lawns.

Details of another big outdoor New Year’s Day concert are set to be announced soon.

The Mona main stage will host live music performances daily during the 50 Days of JAM (Jazz at Mona) program, which kicks off on December 10.

And the MoMa market returns for three days from January 20-22 to coincide with Mofo and will then be held each Sunday until Easter. Irreverent US singer, songwriter, pianist and Mofo repeat offender Amanda Palmer will play intimate solo shows in Mona’s Nolan Gallery on February 10 and 11.

Palmer, who rose to prominence as one half of punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, is a regular visitor and something of an honorary Tasmanian — as evidenced by her song Map of Tasmania, from her 2011 album Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under.
