Hundreds of Tasmanians to gather for Remembrance Day ceremonies

RSL urges Tasmanians to gather and reflect on all those who have died in armed conflict as the nation prepares for Remembrance Day.

HUNDREDS of Tasmanians will come together to remember all those who have died or suffered in armed conflict on Friday.

More than 40 Remembrance Day services are planned for around the state, with the largest gathering expected at the Hobart Cenotaph.

RSL Tasmania CEO Noeleen Lincoln said urged people to take a moment to reflect with a grateful heart, wherever they are at 11am.

“We have a vast amount of people we need to be grateful for. We need to be grateful for their sacrifices, which have given us the freedoms we have today,” Ms Lincoln said.

Every year, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the nation pauses to remember servicemen and women.

Remembrance Day, which was originally known as Armistice Day, has been observed since the end of World War I. This year marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the war.

Ms Lincoln said Remembrance Day would be observed in schools, government departments and many organisations. While the services did not draw the crowds of Anzac Day, which is a public holiday, she urged people to attend a gathering if they were able.

They could also support the RSL’s Poppy Appeal, with money raised going to ex-service and current service personnel and their families.

Lindisfarne RSL president Barry Ginn said his branch expected about 50 people to come together at the Lindisfarne Cenotaph, in Anzac Park, from 10.30am tomorrow.

Anzac Park commemorates every conflict Tasmanians have been involved in since the Boer War.

“It’s about the big picture rather than the individual,” said Mr Ginn, who served in the Vietnam War.

The park’s original 1922 cenotaph carries the names of those who died in the two world wars, but seven memorials have been added to the precinct since.

Where you can honour the fallen

THE 98th anniversary of the armistice that signalled the end of World War I will be observed in more than 40 Tasmanian cities and towns tomorrow.

Remembrance Day marks the moment the guns of war fell silent at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

The Returned and Services League, local councils and a growing number of schools invite community participation at Remembrance Day events throughout the state, in particular the observance of a minute’s silence at 11am.
