TWO-time leading Brisbane Lions goalkicker Josh Green has no regrets about putting contract negotiations on hold midyear despite being cut last week.
The Tasmanian small forward — the club’s leading goal kicker in 2014 and ’15 — was not offered a new deal under new coach Chris Fagan.
Green, who recommitted to Brisbane before the season after Essendon had showed interest, decided against discussing his contract as he struggled to regain his explosive best after a broken foot in the pre-season.
But after being well regarded at the start of the year the 24-year-old fell out of favour, managing 10 games and 11 goals as the Lions finished second last on the ladder.
“I sat down with the club during the year looking at a contract and all that, but I wasn’t playing good footy and I was injured, so I wanted to just get through the year and reassess,” said Green, who kicked 107 goals in six seasons with Brisbane.
“Hindsight is a wonderful thing, when you make a decision you make it for a few reasons.
“After sitting back down with the club I decided I needed a fresh start and they agreed.
“There are no bad feelings towards the club at all, I’m very thankful of the opportunity they gave me and hoping to find a new home in the next week or two.”
Green, who at his damaging best formed part of the famed “mosquito fleet” alongside Dayne Zorko and Lewis Taylor, has attracted interest from several clubs and is hoping to land a new home as a delisted free agent.
It is understood the Bombers are still keen on him, with Green confident his best football is still ahead of him.
“I am looking at the positives of it all, I would have loved to have hung around and played with the boys and had some success but that is done and I’m really looking forward to a new challenge,” he said.
“A fresh start and with my age and the experience I have got, I know I can add something to a team and play a part.
“My best footy is ahead of me, I just need to get that opportunity.”
