After losing 150kg in four years, Mr Nelson has joined the Knights Gridiron Club, which will kick off its Tasmanian gridiron season on November 19.
Having weighed around 300kg in 2012, the now 32-year-old thought he would die waiting for lap band surgery if he failed to drop to the required weight of 228kg.
After having the surgery 18 months ago, he now weighs just under 150kg and is ready to get out on to the sporting field.
“I know I have to continue to eat right and exercise,” Mr Nelson said. “But mentally and physically I feel a million times better. I have a social life now and I play with some great blokes.”
Mr Nelson said he would play offensive line.
“I have always been a fan of gridiron and it’s another good opportunity to keep healthy.”
And by summer he hopes to drop to 120kg so he is able to have surgery to remove 30kg of excess skin following his rapid weight loss.
