GLENORCHY residents have been warned about possible smoke and ash emanating from a fuel-reduction burn in the area.

Weather permitting, the 50ha burn-off — part of the Tasmania Fire Service’s four-year Fuel Reduction Program — will be conducted at Limekiln Gully and is likely to take two to three days to complete.

During burning operations, public access to the area will be restricted.

The TFS has urged the public to remain out of the area during and in the days after the operation until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails.

While the fire intensity will be low, it will generate flames, smoke and ash. People with medical conditions are advised to have a plan for avoiding smoke from the burn.

Smoke may also persist some days afterwards depending on wind conditions.

Meanwhile, TFS will undertake a smaller 30ha burn-off at Weymouth, in the state’s North-East, today with similar warnings in place. The burn-off will take one day to complete.
