Barrington, in the state’s North-West, was today named as the winner of the Ixom 2016 Best Tap Water in Australia competition, with the successful sample being provided by TasWater from its Barrington Water Treatment Plant.

Barrington and TasWater will now go on to represent Australia at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition in West Virginia in the US.
The accolade comes as 20 other Tasmanian towns remain on boil-water alerts because the water is not safe to drink straight from the tap.
The Australian winner was announced in Marysville, Victoria, which took out the national award last year.
The Water Industry Operators Association of Australia chief operations officer Craig Mathisen said the competition was a testament to the high-quality of our water and the diligence and commitment of the operational employees who provided a supply of safe, great tasting water to communities across the country.
“Many of us turn on the tap for a drink of water, to cook and take a shower and give little thought to what it takes to operate and maintain the municipal water infrastructure,’ Mr Mathisen said.
