IT IS among the oldest local shows in Tasmania, and the Brighton Show at the Pontville Recreation Grounds on Sunday will again give a nod to its agricultural heritage.

Brighton Agricultural Show Society president Geoff Jackson said the one-day event, which attracts about 15,000, is taking shape for a big day.

“We have a great crew of volunteers organising the show. It’s really taking shape for a family-friendly show,” Mr Jackson said.

“We are close to the city but we really do have a lot of the country feel. We get a good crowd, you’ve a got a job to move at times.”

Brighton is hosting the state high-jump competition for dogs, which is open to all breeds. Competitors must jump or climb, unassisted, over a wall that will increase in height after each round. The highest jump will win $200 prizemoney.

Also renowned bullock-team handler Brian Fish and his bullock team will demonstrate the skills of yesteryear.

The show program features woodcutting, agricultural livestock and agri expo, as well as competitions for pet guinea pigs and dogs and a pet parade.

Judging of junior livestock handlers, and young aspiring judges can learn the science behind judging.

Gates open 9am-4pm. Entry: family 2 adults and 3 children $25, adult $10, child under 16 $5, under 6 free. Free parking on site.
