Snake Catchers Adelaide’s surprise tip after Belair shed find

A snake catcher says homeowners should be careful of slithering visitors slipping inside to escape the heat in a way some might not suspect.

Sweltering South Aussies have been warned not to accidentally let any slithering visitors slip into their homes in the state’s heatwave, as video reveals on Adelaide man’s unwanted guest getting the boot.

Snake Catchers Adelaide owner Rolly Burrell said despite snakes enjoying the sun, they did not like it when it got too hot.

“Believe it or not, they (snakes) don’t like it any hotter than 34C or 36C max,” he said.

“Anything in the mid 20s is perfect snake weather.”

The tips come after Mr Burrell posted a video to Facebook showing his employee Max catching an eastern brown snake in a shed at Belair this week.

The video shows Max retrieving the snake behind a shelving unit before putting it into a bag.

Mr Burrell said this it was “very common” for snakes to hide in sheds.

“I just found one sitting on someone’s dash yesterday morning,” he said.

Mr Burrell said that in extreme heat, like the state is experiencing this week, snakes look for airconditioned homes to cool down in.

“If they’re stuck in the garden and go past a cool building, they’ll go in there to cool down,” he said.

The snake catcher, who has been in the business for 50 years, said the cool air that blows under doors attracts snakes who then slither inside – using any opening they can find.

“They love going through cat doors,” he told The Advertiser.

Mr Burrell warns people to not to leavve screen doors open over the next couple of days as a snake may try to enter the house.

“I advise people not to do that,” he said.
