A venomous snake has finally been caught after spending days hiding in a popular shopping centre in Adelaide’s south.
The red-bellied black snake was first spotted at Westfield Marion on Tuesday afternoon before making its way into the roof space.
Jarrad Waye of Adelaide Snake and Rodent Control was called out to the job immediately but was unable to catch the snake until three days later.
It comes after amazed shoppers videoed a snake trying to enter an Aldi near Adelaide Airport earlier in the month, and a bizarre video of an two eastern brown snakes in Hahndorf – with one eating the other.
Mr Waye spent an hour and a half trying to find the snake on Tuesday but he said it was hard once it got in the roof cavity.
“Just trying to locate him was the hard part,” he said.
On Wednesday morning the well-known snake and rodent catcher returned in an attempt to find the snake before shoppers flooded the popular centre.
Once again evading the snake catcher, it continued to roam freely until Friday night.
Video footage shows the wrangler rushing into the centre to finally catch the snake which, at the time, was hiding in a store room under the escalators.
The person videoing the unfolding events can be heard saying “get him, get him, get him,” as Mr Wade grabbed the snake from a light.
Mr Waye said he believes the centre’s CCTV showed the snake entering the centre via a shopper’s car.
“(It’s) scary for the driver in the car,” he said. “They (snakes) have been known to like travelling in cars.”
Mr Waye gave the snake to Cleland Wildlife.
“They said they’d love to put him on display,” he said.
