With the Queensland election just days away, here is how you can avoid the crowds and vote early.

The Queensland state election is fast approaching, with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington hard at work on the campaign trail in the lead up to October 31.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic will no doubt have a big impact on how election day looks this year, with an expansion of in-person and postal voting options and measures implemented in the lead-up on the basis of chief health officer Dr Jeanette Young’s advice.

Voting has already opened – here’s how you can cast yours early.

Casting a postal vote is just one of three ways Queenslanders can vote in this year’s election.

Postal vote applications close this Friday, October 16.

POSTAL VOTE

Any Queenslanders planning to submit their vote via the mail had to have applied by October 16 – any later, and you unfortunately will have missed out.

As soon as you receive your form – which will be mailed out once candidate nominations closes, the ballot paper order is drawn and ballot papers are printed – the ECQ encourages you to vote, sign, witness and return your vote as soon as possible.

To be included in the count, postal votes must be returned by Tuesday, November 10.

PRE-POLLING

Another option available to voters hoping to avoid the crowds on October 31 is casting their vote early at a pre-polling booth.

Early voting opened on Monday, October 19 and will run until this Friday, October 30. Electors can pay a visit to one of the state’s 200 early-voting centres, with booths open during the following hours:

• Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 9am to 6pm

• Tuesday and Thursday: 9am to 9pm

“The ECQ is expecting most electors to vote during the early voting period for the state general election and has expanded the number of voting centres and hours of operation to maximise opportunities for people to vote,” an ECQ spokesman said.

“This will assist with social distancing and limit the numbers of people attending polling booths on election day.”
