The huge clue in betting markets on who will win Qld election

She is facing pressure from the rest of Australia over a contentious closed border decision, but Queenslanders love Annastacia Palaszczuk.

NT election a lesson for Qld Premier Palaszczuk

With just days until Queenslanders head to the polls, the odds of re-election look to be in Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s favour.

The Courier-Mail’slatest YouGov Poll of 2000 Sunshine State residents revealed that, on a two-party preferred basis, Labor leads the LNP 52 per cent to 48 per cent – a stunning turnaround for the Labor Party.

Compared with 29 per cent in February, according to the poll, 57 per cent of Queenslanders now approve of how Ms Palaszczuk has managed the COVID-19 pandemic – while dissatisfaction with Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington has risen to 32 per cent.

While 30 per cent of voters remain undecided in the lead-up to October 31, Ms Palaszczuk led Ms Frecklington 48 per cent to 22 per cent as preferred premier.

The latest Newspoll, conducted for The Australianon October 16, also showed Ms Palaszczuk is on track to deliver the ALP a third term of government. The Premier leads Ms Frecklington 56 per cent to 32 per cent as the “better premier”, with 63 per cent of Queenslanders saying they’re satisfied with Ms Palaszczuk ’s performance.

According to Sportsbet, Ms Palaszczuk is leading Ms Frecklington $1.35 to $3 in the odds to be sworn in as premier, with a Labor majority government the favourite at $1.85 and a Labor minority or LNP majority at $4.

Voting opened on last Monday – with Queenslanders encouraged to help keep things COVID-safe by filing a postal vote or heading to one of the state’s 200 early voting centres before October 30.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic will no doubt play a major role in not only how the election looks, but in both party leaders’ popularity – particularly how they plan to repair the economy, create more jobs and support the health industry.

Unfortunately for some residents – both in and outside of the Sunshine State – Ms Palaszczuk’s contentious border ruling will likely stay in place regardless of who’s elected.

“The health advice is that it is 28 days … we accept that advice,” Ms Frecklington told reporters in Townsville last week.

However, she assured Queenslanders her border stance was different to the Premier’s, adding that “I’ve always said that borders shouldn’t be closed for a day longer than they need to be”.

Ms Palaszczuk, meanwhile, has been “playing politics with the border and playing politics with the pandemic”, she said.

“With me as premier, you would have a premier that would make decisions with compassion, consistency and common sense.”
