Teen girls in coma after 4WD driven by 18-year-old man smashes into Queensland home
The families of two 16-year-old girls in a coma after the car they were in smashed into a home have asked for privacy in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Two teen girls are fighting for life in hospital after a car they were in crashed into a house earlier this week.
A Toyota Landcruiser driven by an 18-year-old man smashed into a Chinchilla home in Western Downs, west of Brisbane, Tuesday about 8.40pm.
While the man avoided injury, his two 16-year-old passengers, Bree Critch and Cassi West, sustained critical injuries and are both in comas in hospital.
Cassi, a dance instructor, was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with a head injury while Bree was taken to Toowoomba Hospital with serious facial injuries, Courier Mail reported.
A Chinchilla resident told the publication there had been “a lot of change (in their conditions)” since the incident.
“Everyone knows everyone here so we’re all pretty shaken. We’re just doing what we can to support their families,” the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.
Kirty Mitchell, Bree’s stepmother, asked the community for privacy in a post to Facebook Wednesday.
“Thank you everyone from The Critch Family. We need time to process what has happened and need some privacy for the coming weeks,” her post read.
“Thanks everyone for your support. Our baby girl Bree needs it more than you know.”
Students at Chinchilla State High School – where the girls are enrolled – have been offered counselling, the Department of Education told the publication.
The teenage boy appeared to be in shock following the dramatic crash, a neighbour recalled.
“The boy driving the car got her out and put (Cassi) in the recovery position, he couldn’t get the other girl out of the car,” she told Courier Mail.
“I called triple-0 straight away and stayed with Cassi the whole time. This is a terrible thing that should never have happened. It’s tragic. They’re just kids.”
A distinct “metal on metal” sound was heard at the time of the crash, another neighbour said, who rushed to the scene to help before emergency crews arrived.
“I attended to the boy, who really tried to help, while my daughter was helping one of the girls until paramedics got there,” she told the publication.
“My kids live around the corner and I called them to help, my daughter knows first aid was helping the girl who was stuck in the car.”
The incident is being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit, with witnesses and members of the public asked to come forward with information and dashcam footage.
Police were understood to be seeking the driver of a light-coloured Toyota Prado that could have been in the area at the time.
