Two teenage girls are still fighting for life after a crash in the Western Downs town of Chinchilla on Tuesday night with the dramatic moments after the crash revealed.
Bree Critch and Cassi West, both 16 years old, were critically injured when a Toyota LandCruiser they were passengers in crashed through a fence and into a house on Wambo St about 8.40pm Tuesday.
The 18-year-old male driver was not injured.
Both girls are still in comas, with Cassi – who works as a dance instructor at Xpression Dance Academy – flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane with a critical head injury and Bree to Toowoomba Hospital with serious facial injuries.
“There hasn’t been a lot of change (in their conditions),” a Chinchilla resident said, speaking to The Courier-Mail on the condition of anonymity.
“Everyone knows everyone here so we’re all pretty shaken. We’re just doing what we can to support their families.”
Bree’s stepmother, Kirty Mitchell, took to Facebook on Wednesday night to thank the community for the messages of support.
“Thanks everyone for your support. Our baby girl Bree needs it more than you know,” she wrote.
“We need time to process what has happened and need some privacy for the coming weeks.”
Both girls are students at Chinchilla State High School, where a Department of Education spokesman said the girls’ peers have been offered counselling and assistance.
A neighbour who witnessed the aftermath of the crash said the driver of the car appeared to be in shock at the scene.
“The boy driving the car got her out and put (Cassi) in the recovery position, he couldn’t get the other girl out of the car,” she said.
“I called triple-0 straight away and stayed with Cassi the whole time.”
“This is a terrible thing that should never have happened. It’s tragic.
“They’re just kids”
Another neighbour said she heard the loud screeching of “metal on metal” as the car came to a stop in front of her house.
“The airconditioner stopped it. Any further and it would’ve got the house,” she said.
“I attended to the boy, who really tried to help, while my daughter was helping one of the girls until paramedics got there.
“My kids live around the corner and I called them to help, my daughter knows first aid was helping the girl who was stuck in the car.”
Many responded with offerings of support.
“Love you all. Feel our arms around you all,” Kath said.
“Bree … you can do anything because you’re a strong, brave and smart Critch,” Alexandra wrote. “We love you guys and will be here for you in any capacity that you need.”
The Forensic Crash Unit are still investigating and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
It is understood that police are also looking for a light-coloured Toyota Prado that may have been in the area at the time of the crash.
