Security guard suffers serious stab wounds in alleged teen attack

An experienced security guard was left in a pool of blood after allegedly being set on by teens armed with a meat cleaver-like weapon.

A third teenager has been charged with the attempted murder of a security guard who was seriously injured when a group of teens allegedly attacked him with a meat cleaver-like weapon.

Johnny Whenuaroa, an employee of security company Securecorp, was on patrol at Westfield Helensvale, on the Gold Coast, Friday morning when disaster unfolded.

The 57-year-old – also a champion bodybuilder – had at about 7.45am escorted a teen out of the shopping centre before a group of four returned a short time later.

A 13-year-old Upper Coomera girl appeared at Southport Children's Court today, while a 19-year-old Oxenford man appeared at Southport Magistrates Court.

The man, identified by Courier Mail as Kai Collins, was charged with one count each of attempted murder, robbery with violence, attempt to enter premises and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

He was not required to enter a plea.

The latest teenager to be charged was due to also face Southport Children’s Court today.

An alleged violent attack subsequently unfolded as one teen allegedly took to the man with the large knife.

As mortified onlookers sourced first aid supplies from nearby shops before paramedics arrived, the teens allegedly fled in a Holden Trax SUV that had allegedly been stolen the day beforehand.

Police tracked the vehicle and intercepted the teens on Distillery Road in Beenleigh about 8.35am before taking all four into custody.

The security guard was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

He has many bodybuilding accolades to his name.

Police said further suspects were expected to be charged in the coming days.

It would be further alleged the Holden Trax was stolen on August 24 after three males assaulted a woman and stole her keys in a business carpark on Mount Warren Boulevard in Mount Warren.

Mr Whenuaroa, who has multiple accolades in bodybuilding, had more than 20 years of security guard experience under his belt before Friday’s incident, Courier Mail reported.

He had been working at the busy Westfield for several years.

Friends told the publication he was a generous and selfless person who would “give you the shirt off his back”.
