Man charged with murder after fatal shooting near shopping centre at Beenleigh, Queensland
Police allegedly found a man hiding near a discarded gun carrying ammunition, hours after another man was shot dead at a park near a shopping centre.
A man has been charged with murder after another man was fatally shot in a park near a shopping centre on the Gold Coast.
A 35-year-old Bahrs Scrub man was found with a single gunshot wound to his chest at Hugh Muntz Park, next to Beenleigh Marketplace shopping centre at about 10.40pm on Tuesday, December 2.
He died at the scene.
Police allege a stolen white Kia Stonic sedan with stolen registration plates fled the scene shortly after the shooting.
A tyre deflation device was deployed, with the alleged assailant abandoning the car at the intersection of Hope Island Rd and Helensvale Rd, fleeing on foot to nearby bushland.
The dog squad was deployed to track down the alleged shooter, who was found hiding underwater among the reeds near Saltwater Creek.
He was arrested at the scene.
The 22-year-old was charged last week with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of weapon (firearm), possessing explosives (ammunition) and receiving tainted property.
Homicide detectives have now charged him with murder.
He is scheduled to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Footage released by Queensland Police showed the moment the 22-year-old was located by the dog squad, shortly after a discarded firearm was allegedly found nearby.
