The man accused of killing his mother in the front yard of her home allegedly washed himself down with a hose before fleeing to the Brisbane International Airport with hopes of flying to Tokyo.

Alexander Clive Webb, 40, wascharged with murder after his mother, Cecilia Webb, 79, was found in the front yard her home on Chestnut Place at The Gap in Brisbane’s north about 4.20pm on Monday.

She had suffered “multiple stab wounds” and was declared dead at the scene, police said.

Detective Inspector Michael Jones told reporters that Mr Webb, who is from Victoria, allegedly fled the scene in an Uber before visiting another address in South Brisbane.

He then took a second Uber to the Brisbane International Airport, where police detained him at the entrance.

The man had purchased tickets to fly to Tokyo, police said.

“(The plane tickets were) booked after the incident had occurred,” Inspector Jones said on Tuesday.

Police alleged Mr Webb had purchased a “Japanese cooking knife”, which police believe was used during the incident, he said.

Ms Webb was allegedly stabbed “multiple times” in “different regions’ of her body, police said, with some defensive wounds.

Inspector Jones said it was “one of the worst crime scenes” he had ever witnessed during his career.

He told reporters that police would allege the weapon used was left at the scene.

Mr Webb also sustained minor injuries to his hands following the incident, with one resident allegedly assisting him with first aid.

“They didn’t understand what happened, and they offered him some first-aid treatment because he had an injury to his hand,” Inspector Jones said.

Mr Webb“washed himself down” with a hose afterwards, Inspector Jones said.

There were no domestic violence orders between Mr Webb and his mother, police said.

During a brief appearance before Brisbane Arrests Court on Tuesday, Mr Webb’s matter was adjourned to the call-over date on April 22.

He made no application for bail.

Mr Webb’s occupation is listed as a “student” in court documents.

Ms Webb had been frequently seen gardening in her home and had been living alone at the time of the alleged murder.

Neighbour Ross Parker told The Courier-Mail that Ms Webb’s husband had died about 18 months earlier.

“Everyone was kind of rallying around her in the street to help her with shopping, gardening,” Mr Parker said.

Locals said the circumstances were a “shock” and shared tributes to Ms Webb, who was described as a “lovely lady”.

“So what’s happened to her and where it has happened … how confronting that is, it’s a real shock,” Mr Parker said.

A major manhunt for Mr Webb was soon under way, with police officers, sniffer dogs, and a police helicopter all scouring the streets.

The 40-year-old Victorian man was arrested by Australian Federal Police officers at Brisbane International Airport shortly before 6.30pm.

Police allege he and the woman were known to one another.

The Victorian man has since been charged with murder (domestic violence offence) and has been remanded in custody.

He will face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
