‘Daddy’: Instagram storm over Anthony Albanese’s vintage photo
Anthony Albanese has caused a stir on social media after sharing a photo of his much younger self during a pro-Medicare rally in the 1990s.
Anthony Albanese has caused a storm on social media, being called a “daddy”, after sharing a vintage photo of himself.
The federal Labor leader shared the 25-year-old retro snap on his Instagram this morning, showing him protesting the closure of a Medicare office in the mid-1990s.

Mr Albanese said Australians couldn’t afford to “be complacent” about the universal health care system, which was designed and implemented under Labor governments.
“Thirty-seven years ago today, Medicare was born,” Mr Albanese wrote on Instagram. “For me, it’s one of Australia’s greatest achievements. It shows what we can do when we have a government that’s on your side.
“But we can’t be complacent. This photo was taken in 1996 when the Howard Government was trying to close a Medicare office in my local community. There are still people who want to undermine and whittle away Medicare as we know it. Labor built Medicare – and we’ll defend it. Always.”
But the picture sparked a flurry of comments about Albo’s youthful appearance and “fighting spirit”.
“Young Albo daddy as f**k,” one woman wrote.
“What a great photo,” another said.
“I remember you looking like that and it was only yesterday,” another woman wrote on Facebook.
“Loving that tie Albo,” another wrote.
Other commenters urged the Labor leader to “get a bit of mongrel” about him as he faced what many believe will be a federal election year.
“Can you please get this fighting spirit back,” one man wrote.
Others praised Australia’s Medicare system, calling it “one of Australia’s greatest achievements”.
“My brother-in-law is fighting the fight of his life against cancer at the moment. If it wasn’t for our health system he would be dead or in massive debt,” one commenter wrote.
“We are so lucky to have Medicare and only a Labor government would have ever had the vision and the REAL interests of all Australians to implement and continue to fight for this program. Never forget.”
The post attracted more than 6700 reactions on Facebook and more than 3400 likes on Instagram.

Last week the Prime Minister Scott Morrison shared his own vintage photo of himself to mark students returning to school around the country. Mr Morrison, who said he was “aged around 5” when the photo was taken, was in his Clovelly Primary School uniform in the photo.
“So cute! Who could have thought during that time that this kid would become the Prime Minister of this great country?” one woman wrote in a comment on Facebook.
“Aww, so cute. You had so much hair. All gone now,” another said.
Others commenting noted they could “still see the resemblance”.
