Kids caught lighting fire with blowtorch

Police have taken action against three men who were caught breaching the state-wide fire ban, with a group of children also caught lighting a fire.

At about 11.35am police and fire crews were called to Sullivan Street, Worrigee after a small grass fire broke out.

Crews attended and put out the blaze and a nine-year-old boy admitted to lighting the fire with a blowtorch with a group of children.

Due to the child’s age, he was issued a warning under the Young Offenders Act.

Three adults have also been caught breaching the fire ban.

He was issued with an on-the-spot $2200 fine.

At about 7pm on Monday police were called to a home in Prestons following reports a man was burning fence palings in a cylindrical barbecue.

Embers from this fire fell to the ground and ignited palings, causing a secondary blaze.

Both fires were put out and the 35-year-old man was also fined.

Then at about 5am today a 46-year-old man allegedly lit a fire in a coal bbq at a home in Lalor Park.

RFS attended and extinguished the fire.

The man was then arrested for failing to comply with a total fire ban order and breach of bail.

He is due to appear in court today.

The total state-wide fire ban has been extended until tomorrow. It means no fires out in the open.

General purpose hot works such as welding, grinding or gas cutting or any activity that produces a spark or flame are not to be done in the open.

Mrs Boswood told The Courier Mail her husband had been fighting the blaze on a private property when he captured the terrifying "whirlywind".
