Wagga Wagga woman filmed throwing cat in ‘disgraceful’ video
A woman is being investigated over alleged animal cruelty after she was filmed throwing a cat across a backyard towards chasing dogs.
Police are investigating a young woman for allegedly throwing a pet cat in a “disgraceful” video posted on social media.
The footage showed the woman from Wagga Wagga in New South Wales, named as Charli Gowland, hurling the cat into the air and into the path of a small dog.
The stunt was filmed by a friend, who then posted the video on Instagram asking followers to “caption this”.
Ms Gowland told 7 News she threw the domestic long-haired cat, named Merlin, because it had attacked her dogs, but admitted it was wrong and apologised.
A Wagga Wagga police officer described the video as “absolutely disgraceful” and said there was “zero tolerance for animal cruelty” in the community.
“Apart from it being really distasteful and disgusting, I don’t see why anyone would see a video like that being funny,” they said.
According to a report, the cat had died from being thrown by Ms Gowland.
Ms Gowland, however, insisted the cat survived the throw, and was fine.
The maximum penalty for animal cruelty offences in New South Wales is a five-year jail term or $22,000 fine.
