Truck crash and oil spill causes heavy traffic delays near Sydney domestic airport
Hazmat crews are working to contain an oil spill leaking from a shipping container after two trucks crashed near Sydney domestic airport
Hazmat crews are working to contain an oil spill leaking from a shipping container after two trucks crashed near the domestic airport, sparking significant delays on Wednesday morning.
Just after 4.45am two B-doubles collided on Joyce Dr, causing a large amount of oil to spill onto the road and sending emergency services racing to the scene.
Joyce Dr is closed in both directions between Wentworth Ave and O’Riordan St as hazmat crews clean up the spill.
“Avoid the area, use an alternative route, allow extra travel time particularly if you’re travelling to the domestic terminal,” Live Traffic Sydney said.
Joyce Dr is expected to be closed for some time while emergency services work to clear the road.
Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it may take a number of hours before crews reopen the road.
“The truck has lost about 5000L of a flammable liquid, it’s used to make plastics and it continues to leak,” FRNSW Superintendent Dewberry said.
“It’s going to take a number of hours until we can get this area stabilised.”
MASCOT: Joyce Dr remains closed between Wentworth Ave & O'Riordan St due to a fluid spill following a 2-truck crash. Local diversions are in place but avoid the area if you can as traffic's already heavy. Anyone travelling to @SydneyAirport should allow plenty of extra time. pic.twitter.com/aI7XkAqsIE

More to come.
