How to watch Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton’s first election debate

Critical debate looms for both Albanese and Dutton - here’s how to watch.

‘Good opportunity’ for Dutton and Albanese to ‘make their case’ at first leaders’ debate

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will try to ram home his case for re-election, while Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will attempt to pull the rug out from under him, when the two clash for their first debate of the campaign tonight.

The Sky News/Daily Telegraph People’s Forum will be broadcast live from western Sydney, with viewers able to tune in on this masthead’s website and app, or on Sky News with the debate kicking off at 7.30pm Tuesday.

The debate between the two leaders will be moderated by Sky News chief news anchor Kieran Gilbert, with Mr Albanese and Mr Dutton answering questions selected from a crowd of 100 undecided voters.

It’ll be the first debate of the campaign and comes at a crucial juncture for both.

For Opposition leader Mr Dutton, a victory at the debate will enable him to shake off a start so sluggish it has led to internal rumblings within the Coalition.

Otherwise, Mr Albanese – after a strong start to the election campaign – could be reminded a week is a long time in politics, if a bad showing allows Mr Dutton to seize the narrative for the coming weeks.

It’s understood former Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has been used as a sparring partner to sharpen the Prime Minister’s debating skills.

“I look forward to discussing not just with Peter Dutton, but as well…the people who come along to ask questions…,” he said on Tuesday when asked about Andrews’ help.
