Anthony Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon struggled not to laugh after spotting the massive bible carried by Tony Burke when he was sworn.

Hilarious footage has captured the moment Anthony Albanese’s girlfriend Jodie Haydon appeared to struggle not to laugh after spotting the enormous bible Tony Burke brought with him when he was sworn in.

Mr Burke carried the huge bible to be sworn in alongside 29 fellow new ministry members for Wednesday morning’s ceremony at Government House.

Ms Haydon appeared unable to hide her amusement at the size of Mr Burke’s bible, and was shown giggling in the front row with a woman seated to her left.

The pair were shown grinning as Mr Burke walked towards the front of the room.

He will serve as leader of the House as well as Employment and Workplace Relations Minister and Arts Minister.

Ms Haydon wasn’t the only one left amused by Mr Burke’s giant bible, with the object fast becoming the butt of many jokes on Twitter.

“Tony Burke being sworn into the ministry, didn’t bring a bible, he’s brought in the whole church,” one person tweeted.

“Right. Never seen a Holy Bible like that in my life,” someone else remarked.

“If it was a who’s got the biggest bible competition, Tony Burke wins,” a third joked.

Mr Burke later took to Twitter himself to explain the meaning behind the sizeable book.

“There’s been some interest in the really large old bible I was sworn in on today as Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for the Arts,” he wrote.

“Dad’s grandfather came to Tumut from Ireland after the famine and bought it on 28 March, 1880.”

One by one, Labor frontbenchers stood before David Hurley to sign their commissions and take the oath of office, promising to serve the Commonwealth of Australia, its land and its people.

Mr Albanese’s historic new line-up features a record number of women – 10 women in cabinet, 13 women in the ministry and 19 on the frontbench.

Wiradjuri woman Linda Burney became the first Indigenous woman to be named Indigenous Australians Minister.

Dr Anne Aly and Ed Husic became the first Muslim Australians to hold federal ministries. Both were sworn in on the Qur’an.

“We have a position whereby I think we have an overflow of talent on our side of the parliament,” Mr Albanese said Tuesday evening.

MPs were sworn in order of seniority, with Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Treasurer Jim Chalmers the first to follow Mr Albanese.

The cabinet was also the most experienced incoming Labor government since federation, with more than half the ministers having previous frontbench experience at a federal, state or territory level.

Mr Albanese said during his election campaign he intended to maintain the same team as in shadow ministry during the Morrison government’s tenure, which has largely remained true.

The new ministry has been sworn in before Mr Albanese flies to Indonesia on Sunday.

Mr Albanese on Tuesday addressed Labor senators and MPs at the first federal caucus since the party won the federal election.
