A WOMAN'S rape ordeal ended when her ex-husband stopped by to pick up mail at her western Sydney home and interrupted her attacker.

Officers are continuing to hunt for a suspect, who broke into the woman's Oakhurst home by climbing through a window about 8pm (AEST) on Tuesday, police said.

Armed with a knife, he then sexually assaulted the 31-year-old, who was home alone and then took the woman's mobile phone and car keys, but fled when her ex-husband arrived.

Chief Inspector Bill Pearce says it was lucky her former husband turned up at the right time.

"He'd just come to collect some mail from the premises," Insp Pearce told Fairfax Radio.

"The situation could have been far worse."

After being disturbed, the attacker drove away in his victim's car with her mobile phone, running over the ex-husband and crashing into a tree on the way.

The car was later found burned out at Toongabbie.

It is believed the man is in his late teens or early 20s and of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance with a slender build.

Police believe the woman did not know her attacker.

Investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
