Chaos unfolded at a busy Sydney intersection this morning following a collision between an unmarked police car and dirt bike, prompting a huge emergency response.

The motorbike rider was struck at the intersection of Mitchell and Henderson Road in Alexandria, an inner city suburb, just before 8am.

Moments later there were upwards of seven police cars on the scene, as well as a police helicopter and NSW Ambulance paramedics, with traffic being blocked from entering the intersection.

Local Leif Johansen captured an eerie scene of debris strewn across the intersection, with the bike tipped onto its side and the front of the unmarked police car smashed up.

Police said officers from the South Sydney Police Area Command had been responding to a job when the collision occurred.

The motorbike rider was taken to hospital in a stable condition and was undergoing surgery for injuries sustained in the crash.

Mr Johansen recalled stepping out his front door to see the police’s beaten up grey sedan and “stuff scattered all over the road” as well as “lots and lots of police cars”.

By midday, he said police had erected a crime scene tent at the intersection and expanded the area they closed off to the public.

Images showed random bits of clothing across the road, and Mr Johansen said his girlfriend also saw a shoe.

He added he was asleep at the time of the crash and was woken by a knock at the door from a police detective who requested footage from his home’s security camera.

Mr Johansen was suspicious of the exact details surrounding the incident, given how quick the response was and the presence of the police commissioner on the scene afterwards.

“It almost seems like it could have been a sting or something that went wrong. Clearly something went wrong because it’s very unusual how fast all the police were here,” he said.

“Unusual from a layman’s perspective anyway.”

The incident will be investigated by a team at the Sydney City Police Area Command, which will be subject to an independent review.
